Minimally Invasive Dentistry
Having published several articles on the oral-systemic health connection in national journals, Dr. Chris Walinski of ZEN DIEGO® DENTAL ARTS in San Diego, is intimately aware of the significance of healthy teeth and gums on overall health, and has brought his expertise to the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry, as a Past President. "Dental care should be focused on removing the least amount of tooth structure, bone or tissue necessary to eliminate what is unhealthy and diseased," says Dr. Walinski.

What is MID?
Minimally invasive dentistry (MID) combines patient education with state-of-the-art technology and practices to treat and prevent dental problems. As simple as this sounds, MID is a revolution of sorts. Historically, dentistry has been based on the "surgical" model. When the dentist detected a disease within the mouth, the lesion was drilled, extracted, straightened, reamed, filed, cut or cauterized. If a lesion was not enough of a threat, then it was "watched" until it grew in size. Over time, patients have endured expensive and extremely invasive procedures that in many cases render a tooth more fragile than it originally was.

What if the disease process could be altered, minimized or avoided? This is the basis of MID. Dental caries (which causes cavities), and periodontal disease result from the action of bacteria. And, by definition, both dental caries and periodontal disease are communicable infections, meaning they can be passed from one person to another. That's right - you can actually "catch" cavities from another person! What's more is that dental decay is not only preventable, but curable as well.

A Philosophical Difference Is Our Advantage
The philosophy of minimally invasive dentistry is to diagnose if the patient has the diseases that cause cavities and gum disease and then treat their infection before it has a chance to cause damage. This is not unlike how your physician identifies heart risks like high blood pressure and cholesterol and helps you manage them so you can live a longer and healthier life. If cavities and gum problems have started, our next aim is to identify them as early as possible and fix the damage with techniques using advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, to prevent expensive re-treatment that is required when teeth fracture later in life because they were over-treated initially.
